TL;DR

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is optimizing content to be cited by AI answer engines, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude. Unlike SEO which optimizes for click-through, AEO optimizes for being quoted. The core tactics: question-shaped headings, 40-60 word direct answers up top, FAQPage schema, high content freshness, and strong entity signals via Organization schema.

What is AEO?

AEO is the practice of structuring content so that generative AI systems select and cite it when answering user questions. It replaces classic SEO's goal of ranking blue links with the goal of becoming the source AI systems paraphrase.

How it differs from SEO

SEO optimizes for Google's ten blue links: title, meta description, backlinks, ranking. AEO optimizes for LLM ingestion: entity clarity, schema density, short direct answers, question-shaped headers, and factual precision.

The two overlap heavily, a well-optimized SEO page usually wins in AEO too, but AEO adds specific structural asks that classic SEO doesn't require.

The five tactics that actually move AEO rankings

1. Question-shaped H2s that match how people prompt AI ('How much does X cost?', 'What's the best Y for Z?'). 2. A 40-60 word direct answer immediately after every H2, LLMs quote these verbatim. 3. FAQPage schema on FAQ content, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews pull directly from this markup. 4. Organization + WebSite schema sitewide with knowsAbout, areaServed, sameAs, establishes entity authority. 5. Frequent updates, LLMs favor recently-updated sources.

What doesn't work

Keyword stuffing, thin AI-generated content, missing schema, and hidden text. LLMs deprioritize content that reads like it was written for search engines rather than humans.
